Origin of Mexican food
One of the things that make Mexican food so unique is its rich and diverse cuisine. For many years, the Spanish word “Cuisine” (pronounced kwi-suh-ree) has referred to the ways in which food is prepared, as well as the way in which food is eaten.
Spanish speakers will recognize the word Cuisine from their other primary language, the Mexican. In fact, many Americans and Canadians might also have an image of Mexico in their minds when they hear the word Cuisine. Often, they are not referring to cooking techniques, but to cooking as a whole. In the Americas, Cuisine is seen as both a way of life and a means of life support.
It is possible that the Spanish who first brought this word to North America made their own Cuisine in their own way. They did not, however, want their children to follow the methods that their Spanish neighbors were using since those methods were far superior to their own.
Mexican food Cuisine Development
Instead, we know that Mexican Cuisine developed in much the same way as American Cuisine has developed in the United States. Many decades ago, most Americans were farmers, and the lifestyles were similar to those of agricultural families. Their culture was focused on food, and eating out was never an option for most.
As farming became more industrialized, the government made sure that Americans were afforded better food, the fruits of which would provide a surplus for consumption. Much of the surplus food was distributed to schools, schools were designed to be places where children could be taught how to take care of their bodies and maintain a healthy balance between diet and exercise. The same is true of Mexicans, who make sure that their children receive the best possible nutrition.
When Americans began to migrate to Mexico, there was a great demand for farmworkers. At first, these migrants were forced to work on the smallest farms, while at the same time they received very little in the way of food. Eventually, however, the opportunities opened up to those with the skills to live outside of the cities, and many began to cross the border looking for work.
As has been mentioned above, most Americans were comfortable in the American lifestyle. The changes that occurred in Mexico, however, were significant. Rather than being comfortable in America, the Mexican people were uncomfortable in their own country.
Since so many people were unable to continue on with their lives, and find jobs, it seemed as though many of them had a good portion of the population on their hands. This drove the demand for more food, and more food meant more jobs. As those jobs were created, more people became involved in running the businesses that supplied the food to those working farms.
With so many different foods, the demand for new recipes also increased. New Mexican Cuisine developed, and new cuisines were born. It is impossible to talk about Mexican food without including the many different styles of meat that are served.
Popular dishes of Mexican food
Popular dishes of Mexican food today include Tamales, which originated in the state of Sinaloa in what is now Mexico. Salsa is an integral part of many Mexican dishes and is usually prepared with pork. Lasagna, a staple of American cuisines, is also popular in Mexico.
